Hazelnuts
Small beginnings
We started with a small planting of 50 trees in 2020 and continued to expand our tree number to 160 trees.
We have several hazelnut varieties including Barcelona, Jefferson, Tonda Romana and Tonda di Giffoni, Lansing and the creatively named 815.02 as our principal production trees, and several pollinator varieties including Merveille de Bollwiller, and Theta.
Our practice harvest in 2025 (25kgs) allowed us to taste the differences between our production varieties and the Barcelona nut is our all-round star – easy to shell, easy to blanch, and delicious when roasted.
2025 Expansion
We are planning to extend our orchard by a further 200 trees during winter 2025 which will take us to 360 trees – with the potential to yield over a tonne of nuts when mature (around 3 years). We anticipate our yields progressively increasing from autumn 2026 as some of our newer trees get bigger. Most of our new production trees will be the Barcelona variety.
Hazelnut health benefits
Hazelnuts are not just delicious – they have significant health benefits. As an energy dense food source, they are micronutrient rich, with high proportion of Omega-3 fatty acids – playing a crucial role in brain and heart health and reducing inflammation.
